How to pack a TV for moving without a box

Written by Chris Cornish | 4 January, 2023

Few things are as exciting as moving to a new house. But, along with all the excitement comes a lot of work - like packing up all your belongings. One of the trickier items to pack is usually the television. Here are a few tips on how to pack a TV for moving without a box, so you can get your TV safely to your new home.

  1. Take the TV out of the stand or off the wall
  2. Unscrew or remove all cords from the back of the TV
  3. Place the TV face down on a soft, padded, clean surface
  4. Wrap the TV in bubble wrap or another protective material
  5. Secure the wrapped TV with packing tape
  6. For added protection place the TV in a sturdy box, that is slightly larger than the TV itself after it’s been packed.

Take the TV out of the stand or off the wall

If you’re looking to take your TV off the stand or wall, there are a few simple steps you can take to ensure an easy TV dismantle. First and foremost, dust the back of the TV after you turn it off and unplug any cords from the electrical wall outlet. Remove all connected components, such as DVD players, game consoles, and any associated cables. If your TV is mounted onto a wall insert, use specified screwdrivers to loosen it without causing damage. For TV stands and TV furniture mounts, unscrew the mounting arms or brackets until you can safely remove the TV. Be sure to have someone take the weight of the TV while you undo the mounting screws to avoid the TV falling or getting damaged. By taking these steps, you can ensure that your TV is safely removed and ready for packing.

Unscrew and remove all cords from the back of the TV

Unscrewing and removing cords from the back of the TV is one of the most important parts of packing a TV for transportation. It is essential to start here so that when you are ready to move, all of your cables will be disconnected, preventing accidental damage. It is crucial to remember to always unplug TV power cords first, as it's safest to work on a TV that has no power running through it. Once the TV is unplugged, identify each type of cord and where it connects to the TV. Keep in mind that each TV may have different types and anchor points for its respective cords. Carefully unscrew any screws or brackets holding any cords in place from the back of the TV, as outlined above. Label the cords (for reference) before gently unplugging them, or take pictures so you can identify them later on if needed. Whenever possible, place all removed cords inside an empty packing box for moving; this will make packing easier and help prevent any damage or tangling due to improper handling during transit. With all cords safely disconnected, you're now ready to pack your TV with minimal stress.

Tip: Now if you have the original box then it’s as simple as using all its supplied packing material / protective foam. If you don’t have the original box then we explain what to do next.

Place the TV face down on a soft, padded, clean surface

Moving televisions can be stressful and time-consuming, but with a few safe packing tips, it doesn't have to be. First and foremost, always be sure to place the TV face down on a soft, clean, padded surface before attempting to move it. Firmly position the TV so that it won't slip off as you begin to lift it.

If moving the TV yourselves you should also use an appropriate carrying device such as handles or straps specifically designed for safe television transport. Before loading the television into your vehicle, secure the TV with enough padding so that it cannot shift during transit. It's also important to note that when transferring a large flat-screen television on a truck flatbed make sure there are no sharp objects nearby that might cause scratches or breakage. Always ensure that you carry your flatscreen TV upright to reduce the chance of damage to the internal components.

If your TV is bigger than the average one, you may want to consider hiring two people or even professional furniture removalists to help ensure safe handling of the load.

By following these simple safe-packing steps, you can ensure your experience of moving a TV is safe and successful! Work with care and stay safe!

Wrap the TV in bubble wrap or another protective material

Wrapping your TV in bubble wrap is an effective way to add an extra layer of protection during a move. Bubble wrap is highly durable and helps cushion the television, which can lessen the shock it takes when moving from one place to another. Care should be taken when wrapping the TV as too much bubble wrap can make it difficult to manage in handling the TV, and on the journey. Start by cutting out bubble wrap slightly bigger than your television and attach it with clear packing tape around the edges of your TV so that no bubble wrap overlaps onto the screen. It's important to keep bubble-wrapped TV away from any exposed air vents, as these areas could lead to a build-up of moisture and damage the equipment even with bubble-wrap protection. If you don't have bubble wrap, there are other creative options for packaging your TV such as using moving blankets, foam, or soft cushioning and old blankets or towels that provide some protection without leaving precious items uncovered on their journey. No matter what protective material you choose, it's important to always handle fragile goods with extra care during a move to ensure that they arrive safe and sound at their new destination.

Secure the wrapped TV with packing tape

Securing your wrapped TV with packing tape is an essential step in packing, ready for transport. You want to ensure that your sensitive electronics are secure while moving, so packing tape is a must! To start, cut the packing tape into strips and use them to securely wrap the TV. Beginning at the diagonal corners on one side of the television, cross over the corners and then continue wrapping around until all four corners are secured tightly. If packing peanuts have been used to cushion the TV during the move, make sure you reinforce those areas before applying packing tape with extra wrappings. When complete, you should have a tightly wrapped package with minimal gaps that will keep your TV safe as it travels. Make sure that there's plenty of packing tape and use multiple layers for added protection.

Place the TV in a sturdy box, if available, that is slightly larger than the TV itself

Finally, and not essential but recommended if it’s going to be moved in a truck, acquire proper packing boxes for moving that will fit your TV and place the TV in the box to give that final level of protection. You may need to securely tape the box closed with packing tape also. With these tips, you can ensure a safe trip for your valuable electronic goods!
